Yes! Block printing is a traditional form of textile printing that has been around for centuries, a skill that continues to be taught and passed down to future generations. Not only does the art form produce beautiful, one-of-a-kind designs, but block printing also contributes to sustainable fashion practices while supporting communities in India. Let's explore how block printing aligns with eco-friendly principles.
How does block printing minimize energy and water usage?
Block printing involves the use of hand-carved wooden blocks to create intricate patterns; everything is printed by hand. This manual process reduces the need for machinery and electricity, leading to minimal energy consumption. Additionally, the printing process requires minimal water usage compared to conventional printing methods since everything is washed by hand and then dried by hanging or laying out in natural sunlight, further reducing the environmental impact. Fun fact: this is why batches of the same print can sometimes differ in hue because of where it was dried and how much light it had. The more sunlight, the lighter the final print.
How does block printing minimize wastage?
Whether it's reusing dyes for multiple prints to avoid wastage or repurposing fabric scraps to create shopping bags or rugs, we do our absolute best to ensure nothing goes to waste. This commitment to minimizing wastage not only reduces environmental harm but also promotes a circular economy within the fashion industry, and fun gifts for you when you shop with us at our pop-ups!
What happens to the wooden blocks after they wear out?
Wooden blocks used in block printing have a sustainable lifecycle. Once the carving on the blocks wears out and they can no longer be used for printing, the wood can be recycled for other uses. Also, block printing fosters creativity through placement. One block can be used in numerous ways: as a border, as a main print, maybe only half is printed, or it's flipped upside down. The blocks don't tie us down to only one way of using them; we can place them however we wish which also allows them to last and be used for even longer.
Is block printing considered slow fashion?
Yes! The dye is measured out to the gram. The fabric is used up to the scrap. The artisans take their time to ensure accuracy and quality. This is not an art form that can be rushed. Additionally, as a small business, we can't afford to have overstock, so we order in very minimal quantities that meet the vendors' MOQs and our customer demand. Unlike big-name brands, we sell every last piece or repurpose into something else if need be. Such as, in the past, we've transformed low-selling scarves into scrunchies or into shopping bags to give out at our holiday markets.
How does block printing sustain the art form?
By embracing block printing as a sustainable fashion printing method, we are supporting a traditional art form and ensuring it continues to live and thrive. The intricate process of carving wooden blocks and hand-printing fabrics requires skill and craftsmanship that have been passed down through generations. Supporting block printing means supporting the continuation of this cultural heritage and communities in India.
