Tate Bandana

Like a ray of sunshine to brighten up any look, the Tate bandana is a cheerful and effortless way to add print and color to your wardrobe this season.

Due to the nature of hand block printing, print and color may vary from piece-to-piece, and placement of print may not always be exact as everything is handmade and human error does occur. This enhances the artistic nature of hand block printing.

Hand block printed in Jaipur, India.

@frommila Inspired by the warmth of the sun's rays, the Tate Bandana and its vibrant yellow print was designed to shine bright like the big star itself. Bandanas are handy accessories we all should have in our closets. They're light enough to carry around, soft enough to mold into any style, and they effortlessly wrap around the neck all year long whether it's for warmth during the fall or style during the summer. The block printing process started back in January earlier this year when my parents and I traveled to Jaipur, India to visit the block printing workshop and to work with the artists there. We went to sample all of our 2024 collections, and that included our customer-favorite cotton bandanas. We know what our customers like, and that's florals. We knew we wanted an allover floral print, something that could complement a classic pairing like jeans and white tee, but something that could also stand out and enhance rather than blend in or get lost - that's where the yellow print came in. After we found the blocks we wanted to use, the printing process began. First step was to dye the cotton fabric. After the fabric dried, the printing process began, starting with prepping the dyes. The artists started with the main print first, which was the yellow background. After the background dried, the second round began, which was the allover dark green floral design. Once the main print dried, the final part of the design began: the thick border. After the border was completed, the printed fabric was hung to dry before it was washed and dried again, cut, sewn, labeled and shipped out. When coming up with any print, I always try to envision the woman who would wear it, what she would wear the bandana with and how she would style it. When I saw the final design and truly felt its warmth and vibrancy, it reminded me of a California chic girl who would wear this tied in her hair, paired with her favorite bikini, or wrapped around her hair as she cruises in her convertible down the PCH. The first person I thought of and envisioned this bandana styled on was Sharon Tate, and thus was named the Tate Bandana, inspired by the warmth, elegance and carefree spirit she exuded. Bandanas are more than just accessories; the way they're tied and added to an outfit speaks volumes about one's personality. While they're functional in providing warmth, they're also great fun and a way to enhance who you are and how you see yourself. #blockprinting #blockprinted #bandanas #scarfprint #fashionprint #printingprocess ♬ Amas Veritas - Alan Silvestri

The Block Printing Process
Artist drawing out flowers on transparent paper

1. Designing

Whether it's from the creative minds of local artisans in India, or our own, it all starts with a sketch. The prints are drawn out, transferred onto the computer for final tweaks, then printed out to be traced onto a wooden block.

2. Carving

Once the design has been traced, the block is then carved out for printing. Because each block can only print one color at a time, if a print has 5 colors, 5 different blocks need to be made so each color shows up in its correct place when printed.

3. Printing

The most exciting part - seeing the design come to life. Once all the blocks are made, the dyes are mixed, and the printing starts, all by hand, with only rulers or the naked eye used for precision.

After the printing is complete, the fabric is washed, dried outside under the natural sunlight, cut, sewn, and made for you to wear.

I fell in love with the patterns and colors but having an accessible zip down front really sold me since I'm a new mom. Being both breastfeeding friendly and stylish makes it a staple in my closet!
